U.S. Lab-Developed Technology Enables Search and View Videos by Tagging Frames with Recognized Texts

TOKYO, December 9, 2014 — Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. today releases the SkyDesk Media Deliver 1.0 — a cloud service featuring the company’s exclusive video indexing technology developed by FX Palo Alto Laboratory, Inc., one of the major Fuji Xerox research centers in the United States.

This is a video indexing and search service primarily targeted at the education market. It is designed to enable a university or other educational institution to index their lecture videos so that viewers can quickly search for a specific section they want to view.

This technology is applicable to a video of a lecture that uses slides — it can recognize the text displayed in each slide and add tags that contain the recognized words to the key frames that show the corresponding slides. Then, the tag and frame data are transferred to the educational organization that is preparing to publish the lecture video. Fuji Xerox’s exclusive video indexing technology can automatically detect the text within the video and add tags to the key frames, enabling searches within a video even though search tags were not originally given to the video. Using keywords, the viewers can easily search and find a specific scene within the lecture video.

In an educational organization, for example, the video distributor films a lecture video. Then the distributor stores the video data in a designated system and submits the data to a Fuji Xerox cloud server (1 & 2 in the figure). Texts displayed in the slides within the video are recognized and the key frames that show the texts are tagged. The tag and frame data is then returned to the educational organization’s server (3), and the distributor publishes the video as a searchable video (4).

Lecture videos are widely used among educational organizations and companies. These videos are better viewed when they are indexed for keyword searches, but indexing has been a burden as it is time-consuming manual work. Fuji Xerox’s new service automates video indexing, making creation of a searchable video easier. With this technology, the video distributor can better promote their video among viewers, and viewers can quickly search for the scenes they want to view for more efficient study.
