Xerox Commercial Services has notified state officials that it will cut about 500 jobs at its customer service call center in Cary because of reduced demand from a client.

But Xerox spokesman Bill McKee said half of the employees whose jobs are being terminated will be immediately rehired and reassigned to other Xerox clients. McKee also said Xerox will continue adding new positions in the coming months.

McKee would not identify the technology client that forced the elimination of 508 Xerox call center jobs. Xerox provides call center services to various industries, including retail, insurance, telecommunications and the federal government’s new health care exchanges under the Affordable Care Act.

Xerox currently employs about 1,500 people in Cary, 3,200 in the Triangle and 4,400 in North Carolina.
