Ramsey, NJ – September 30, 2015 – As hundreds of Weehawken public school students are returning to classes, they will notice some exciting changes to both the school facilities and curriculum as the result of the leadership of the Weehawken Board of Education. Recognizing the demands of the new global economy, these changes will give Weehawken’s students an edge while making the school system one of the most competitive in Hudson County.

One such significant change is the installation of a state-of-the-art 1,500 sq. ft. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics) Lab at Weehawken High School. Utilizing Konica Minolta’s 3D Systems printers, they were able to outfit their lab with three new 3-D printers. Additional hardware items include four desktop computers, 16 laptops and an interactive SmartBoard.

The lab will offer four sections of STEAM education for students in grades 9-12 and an introductory STEAM course for eighth graders.  This curriculum, which integrates engineering and technology with core academic knowledge in science, technology, engineering, arts and math, will allow students to work collaboratively to solve problems and create solutions with the help of new technology.

Weehawken Board of Education President Richard Barsa credited the new Weehawken School District Educational Foundation with an $80,000 donation to fund the new STEAM Lab.

“The new education foundation, spearheaded by Mayor Richard Turner and operated as a joint partnership between local parents and the Board of Education, has made it possible to develop a cutting edge technology and arts center,” says Barsa. “We are starting out with a bang in the foundation’s first bequest of the STEAM Lab, but it’s just the first of many towards our goal of making the Weehawken school system the finest in the country.”
