LONDON, Nov. 2, 2023 – Leading global provider of sustainable fiber-based packaging, DS Smith, has collaborated with Versuni, home to some of the world’s most renowned domestic appliance brands, to produce and deliver 100% recycled and recyclable packaging solutions.

The new boxes are made with 100% recycled paper with durability for transportation. This sustainable packaging will be extended across Versuni’s Philips home appliance global product portfolio and will initially be applied to Versuni’s top-performing Philips products including the Airfryer, Espresso Machine with Latte Go, Stream Iron 3000 series, Air Purifier, and Cordless Vacuum 800 series. Versuni will then expand this to encompass its full Philips portfolio globally.

DS Smith is also working with Versuni to replace single-use protection buffers (EDF) plastics inside the packaging with sustainable fiber-based packaging alternatives. This is a step forward in fulfilling Versuni’s commitment to deliver 100% plastic free packaging within the next four years.

Additional sustainable measures that are being introduced include reducing the outer printed area of the packaging box, resulting in a 65% reduction in ink usage. By focusing on space optimization and minimizing empty areas in each product box, the dimensions of the sustainable packaging are also being reduced. Traditional paper-based instruction guides within the box are also being replaced with scannable QR-codes printed on the product packaging. Safety instructions, warranty information, and simplified start up guides will remain available in the box.

DS Smith deployed its unique Circular Design Metrics in the design of Versuni’s new packaging. This approach drives sustainable performance through packaging design by reducing waste and pollution and keeping products and materials in use for longer. DS Smith’s Circular Design Metrics help to protect products, ensure that supply cycles are more efficient, boost environmental performance, and deliver improved customer satisfaction.

Wouter van Tol, Head of Sustainability, DS Smith:

“Our purpose as a business is to Redefine Packaging for a Changing World and we can only do this in partnership, so it is enormously encouraging to see a company such as Versuni proactively work with us towards a more circular economy. We are so proud to help them achieve this.

We have partnered with Versuni at all levels of the design and production process to replace plastics and optimize sustainable supply chain processes. Our pioneering Circular Design Metrics tool created in collaboration with the Ellen McArthur Foundation was an essential driver for the innovative solutions we have achieved together.”

As a part of its Now & Next Sustainability Strategy, DS Smith has set key targets to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon, Circular Economy. Since their creation in 2019, the DS Smith Circular Design Metrics have supported thousands of design projects, and around 3,000 circular-ready projects are presented to customers every month.
