Highly productive hardcover casing-in machine can produce a wide range of ultra-short-run hardcover books, including photo and juvenile books.

The Mitabook, manufactured by Swiss-based Photobook Technology (PBTec), fills the gap between manual and semi-automatic binding equipment and more sophisticated high-volume machines, making it a welcome addition to the production of like-sized products. Muller Martini recently announced it will distribute this groundbreaking technology throughout North America, and will debut the machine with live demonstrations at Dscoop, an influential cooperative of HP graphic arts professionals taking place in Washington, DC, March 5-7.

The fully automatic Mitabook is already highly regarded worldwide with 50 installations, including several at CEWE, Europe’s premier producer of photobooks. It has proven to be an incredibly robust and dependable machine. During the recent holidays, the peak season for photobook production, not one PBTec service person was dispatched to handle a machine malfunction.

In addition to photobooks, the machine easily accommodates the ultra-short-run digital hardcover needs of juvenile book and yearbook manufacturers, as well as in-plants producing standard hardcover products. Commented Muller Martini’s Jim Kaeli, Manager of Business Development, Hardcover Solutions, “The Mita product line complements Muller Martini’s already extensive lineup of solutions for hardcover manufacturing which includes our Diamant MC and Diamant MC Digital booklines. Clients who have a need for more automation over current manual methods now have several alternatives to choose from when upgrading or expanding their manufacturing platform.”

The Mitabook takes just one day to install and seconds to set-up, greatly minimizing downtime. Other benefits include:

Fast and reliable. Up to 7 cycles per minute enable production of 350-400 books per hour, including size changes.
Easy touch-screen operation
Barcode technology effortlessly matches book block and case.
Economical. The machine’s small footprint requires just one operator to feed book blocks and cases, and remove completed books.

What’s more, the Mitabook does not use a wing, so scratch marks on inside images are avoided, and PUR books can be processed immediately after binding. And, its hot melt gluing system provides instant adhesion so there’s no need to clean the glue station.

In addition to the Mitabook, Muller Martini is also distributing Mitacase, an ultra-short-run casemaking solution; Mitafold, a layflat folding system; and Mitamax, a layflat gluing system. PBTec will continue to handle all parts and service requests.
