A number of news outletshave reported that the Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency – the U.S. military’s gee-whiz R&D outfit – has been handing out contracts to a number of big tech giants in recent weeks in its pursuit of self-destructing technology. (Insert obligatory “Mission Impossible” reference here).
The point of DARPA’s Vanishing Programmable Resources (or VAPR) effort is to keep certain high-tech components that are becoming more plentiful on the battlefield from falling into the hands of others. Enter companies like IBM and Xerox. In Xerox’s case, DARPA just handed $2.1 million to its Palo Alto Research Center for work on dust. Or specifically, DUST – a Disintegration Upon Stress-release Trigger.
