Hewlett Packard Co.HPQ +0.33%’s new 3-D printing products build on its 2-D expertise and bring the technology one step closer to mainstay status in the enterprise, analysts at Forrester Research Inc.FORR -0.42% said.
The company last month announced a 3-D printer of its own, the Multi-Jet Fusion, as well as a desktop computer-hybrid called Sprout that combines a projector, touch-mat and 3-D scanner to quickly convert objects into images.

The new products from H-P address printing speed, cost and quality that may have traditionally slowed widespread adoption, Forrester said. The printer creates in about an hour an object that would typically require about 23 hours using a top-of-the-line fused deposition modeling printer widely used in manufacturing. It may also open doors to new forms of complex manufacturing. Forrester noted a light bulb socket made of a single material with conductive properties, eliminating the need for wires. And because the two H-P devices use existing H-P Inkjet intellectual property, the hardware will be more familiar to support staff.
