Ghelfi Ondulati S.p.A. installs HP PageWide Web Press T400S for simplified, safe food packaging production

BERLIN, Germany, May 18, 2016 — Today at FEFCO Summit Berlin, HP Inc. is showcasing  its color simplex HP PageWide Web Press portfolio and water-based inks that comply with U.S. and European regulations as well as industry guidance(1) to ensure  corrugated packaging converters attain food safety compliance.

Food packaging is a dominant subset of the packaging segment, representing nearly 40 percent of the corrugated packaging industry, (2) and is a virtually untapped opportunity for digital corrugated packaging converters. To digitally address the food packaging market, converters must ensure their digital printing technology is food safety compliant. HP PageWide Web Presses T400S and T1100S feature water-based HP A50 inks, intended for printing on the non-food contact surface of corrugated paperboard packaging.

“Packaging converters are an important part of the food packaging supply ecosystem, and in order to maintain the trust of consumers and grow business with brands, they must have the capabilities to deliver safe and compliant solutions,” said Eric Wiesner, general manager, HP PageWide Web Press Division, HP Inc. “With HP, converters have a trusted digital ally that intimately understands food safety regulations for the corrugated market and offers high-speed, safe food packaging production.”

Ghelfi Ondulati S.p.A. goes digital for food packaging production

Ghelfi Ondulati S.p.A., a leader in high-quality corrugated packaging materials production for the industrial and fruits and vegetables sectors, recently installed an HP PageWide Web Press T400S to address shorter run lengths, reduce turnaround times and achieve mass customization, while maintaining compliance with international food contact laws and standards.

“With our traditional corrugated printing technology, we did not have the production flexibility needed to address an increasing number of jobs per day, decreasing run lengths and tight turnaround times,” said Luca Simoncini, engineer, Ghelfi Ondulati S.p.A. “We selected the HP PageWide Web Press T400S because of its speed, quality and efficiency, while also meeting food safety regulations that are critical for our business.”

To transition to digital printing technologies, packaging converters, like Ghelfi Ondulati S.p.A., need a trusted technology provider to help navigate food safety compliance. HP has a deep knowledge of global regulatory demands through significant research and development, offering unparalleled food packaging expertise to customers who are new to digital printing.

HP PageWide Web Presses streamline corrugated pre-print production

The 1.06 meter (42-inch) HP PageWide Web Press T400S and the 2.8 meter wide (110-inch) HP PageWide Web Press T1100S are single-pass, high productivity inkjet presses that are designed for the digital pre-print of high quality liners and can produce between 11,640m2/hr and 30,600 m2/hr.

The width of the T1100S enables corrugators to combine many individual jobs together on a roll or across rolls for short, mid or long runs and, unlike traditional analog pre-print, every box can be different. The T1100S also features HP Multi-lane Print Architecture (MLPA) which enables the press to run different jobs with different box sizes and run lengths, revolutionizing digital corrugated production by splitting the web into multiple print lanes. MLPA technology exceeds analog printing technology which is limited to printing multiple copies of one box design with the same look and size.
