For the second year in a row, Commonwealth Digital Office Solutions has been named to the Washington Post’s annual Top Workplaces list.

We are thrilled to be recognized as one of the top 150 companies to work for in the Washington D.C. region. On Sunday, June 19, the Washington Post will be publishing the list, following a celebration at the newspaper’s headquarters June 16.

We are especially pleased to note that the information used to select the top workplaces comes directly from our employees. This award once again underscores our longtime philosophy that excellent customer service comes from happy employees.

Commonwealth Digital: Who Are We?

Founded in 1977, Commonwealth Digital Office Solutions is recognized throughout the Washington-Baltimore metro area as an innovator and leader in helping businesses grow through document management systems, managed network services, managed print services, systems integration, hardware and software solutions. We are a family-owned company with offices in Sterling, VA and Greenbelt, MD. Our terrific team includes our sales team, customer support, technicians, administrative professionals and information technology specialists, all working together to serve our clients in a friendly and efficient way.

At Commonwealth Digital, Employee Care Means Customer Care

Our clients appreciate working with the same trusted contacts year after year. Many of our employees have been with us for decades, and our low turnover and high retention rates are a direct result of our commitment to employee satisfaction. This means consistency and a wealth of institutional knowledge at the service of our clients. Happy employees also mean a pleasant and productive experience for our clients. We hear again and again from clients that our team members—in sales, customer service, administration, and IT—are the very best to work with.

“The average tenure is 23 years, and it’s not by mistake,” says Commonwealth founder and president Mike Sarelson. “[Clients] speak to our employees and they always say one thing in common: everybody looks so happy, everybody seems positive, everybody has a smile…You can feel the fervor in the company as we talk to people, and that’s a great thing.”

Commonwealth Digital: Listening To Our Employees

In selecting its 150 Top Workplaces, The Washington Post used and in-depth employee survey conducted by the firm Workplace Dynamics. For Commonwealth Digital management, one of the things that make this honor so important to us is the fact that the results are determined based on employee feedback.

Commonwealth Digital: Our Strengths

The Washington Post has identified a number of areas in which Commonwealth Digital excels.  At Commonwealth, we are known for our competitive compensation and benefits, but that’s just the beginning. Some of the practices that have consistently been highlighted by our valued employees include the following:

  •      We regularly review financial results with employees so that they have a clear picture of Commonwealth’s profitability.
  •      After a certain profit threshold is reached, profits are shared among employees (at levels based on tenure) with management excluded. That’s a way to generate real buy-in and investment.
  •      We offer annual sales incentive cruise trips that include not only our excellent sales team but also administrative and service employees who have been with the company for more than 20 years.

At Commonwealth, It’s Not Just About The Perks

Our annual cruise is a highlight for employees, but we know that a great workplace is not just about the perks. Even more important is a sense of buy-in for employees. In selecting the Top Workplaces winners, The Washington Post is looking for companies that set a clear direction for the future and create a strong sense of connection between employees and the workplace.

“What really motivates employees is feeling they are part of a company that is going places,” Top Workplaces administrators say. We couldn’t agree more. We feel that our biggest asset is our culture of employee investment and mutual respect.

Commonwealth Digital: Happy Employees Provide Great Service

On June 16, we’ll be sitting down with some of the D.C. area’s leading companies, large and small. All of them have been recognized for taking the best care of their employees. We’re delighted to be included on this list once again. At Commonwealth, we know that satisfied employees mean happy customers. If you’re looking for a career in our field, reach out to us. If you’re looking for document management or managed network services, consider a company where our commitment to employee satis
