Call it the double economic special.
That’s what some city and state officials are calling Wednesday afternoon’s Canon announcement after Yoroku “Joe” Adachi, Canon chairman and CEO, said not only is the company increasing its initial investment at its Newport News facility to $100 million, the city also remains a “high candidate” for the relocation of its coveted global research and development center.
Adachi said officials hope to make their final decision in a “few months.”
“I love surprises like that in the new year,” said Gov. Terry McAuliffe shortly after the announcement. “We’ve been negotiating and talking and putting our best foot forward on that. I feel good, but we’ve got a lot of negotiating to go.”
Shortly after returning from a Japan trade trip in October, McAuliffe hinted that Newport News was a solid contender to land Canon’s global research and development center.
