New grant awards from the Toshiba America Foundation to support exciting Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) education programs in grades 6-12

NEW YORK, NY, August 2, 2021– The Toshiba America Foundation (TAF) today announced over $90,000 in grants for eight innovative classroom STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematic) projects in grades 6-12.

Among these are grants for students to learn biology, engineering, math, physics, environmental science including robotics, coding, and 3D printing. Some of them address critical issues like studying of fragile marine life problems in in the local Everglades watershed area – the common thread across all 8 projects is that they incorporate novel ways to introduce STEM disciplines into the classroom. For example, Ms. Terell’s students at Yantis School in YANTIS, TX plan to use high altitude weather balloons to cultivate her middle school students’ excitement for learning. Equipment purchased with Toshiba grant funds will carry student-designed experiments to the edge of space, allowing them to address real world problems or answer questions about things they have studied in the classroom. Students will participate in every aspect and will present their findings to local industry leaders at community engagement events.

“Science, technology, engineering and mathematics occupations play a key role in the sustained growth and stability of the U.S. economy. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators,” said TAF President, John Anderson. “The grants make the STEM classroom more exciting for both teachers and students.”

Toshiba America Foundation’s grants aim to fund projects designed by innovative classroom teachers. This “direct-to-teacher” approach brings immediate results. Teachers are able to enhance the way they teach STEM subjects because the grant supports equipment for hands-on experiments and project based learning in the curriculum. At TAF, we believe that learning STEM subjects is a lot more fun and engaging than just reading a textbook.
